PETALING JAYA, 27 JANUARY, 2012: Participants of the Retail Shop Transformation Project (Tukar) have reported up to a 40 percent increase in their monthly income, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
he said up to December last year, 519 retailers had joined the programme, which was launched in January 2011 to modernise traditional grocery shops and give them an edge in the competitive retail industry. “The figure surpassed our target, which was 500 shops a year, and from the income aspect, I was informed the average income was 30 to 40 percent, so the Tukar project has succeeded,” he said during a press conference after a celebration of the successful transformation of 519 Tukar shops at Bandar Bukit Puchong here, today. Earlier during the event, deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin officially opened the Mini Harvest Packaging grocery shop owned by Jessica Wong Poh Yeat, who is a single mother. Ismail Sabri said Tukar was clearly well received, as they received more than 2,000 applications for the whole of last year. “There are certain conditions, the applicants must have at least one year retail experience and must be cleared by the bank for the loan,” he said. he said 5,000 grocery stores have been targeted nation wide to join the programme by 2020, with an estimated gross domestic product touching RM3.79 billion. on a separate development, Ismail Sabri said 60 additional Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia are planned for this year. “We’re scouting suitable locations and the criteria and terms will be announced next week,” he added. – Bernama
