Paintings, photographs, ceramic tiles and sculptures. With all of the artwork in Susquehanna Tower, set to open within the month, it could be confused with a gallery.

But the artwork serves as more than just a beautification of the newest section of the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

Medical research indicates that art is helpful in promoting healing. It helps reduce stress, enhance patient care and reduce a patient’s stay in the hospital, said Tracie L. Witter, director of corporate communications for Susquehanna Health.

The works of more than 70 local artists will be on display throughout the tower, 700 High St., which will be open to the public for the first time during an open house from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 26.

The building, which cost about $150 million, was designed to please aesthetically and cater to the art of healing.

“When you start a new renovation, there is an opportunity to create neutral colors to promote healing,” Witter said.

Beds are placed in the rooms to allow in the most light with an outdoor view.

Nearly 400 pieces of artwork will provide a distraction to patients. the artwork also helps in another way.

“It helps the patients feel more at home,” she said.

For artwork to be selected for the tower, which had a groundbreaking in Fall 2009, it had to be inspirational, healing or reflect Susquehanna Health’s mission of extending God’s healing love by improving the health of those it serves.

Some of the pieces include a dramatic ceiling installation at the Susquehanna Tower entrance, sculpted by Rob Fisher Studio; a larger metal sculpture in the atrium by Mike Patterson that reflects the movement of the Susquehanna River; and a woven textile piece called “The Friendship Bracelet: A Community Event” by Jackie Thompson, which was created primarily by community children to celebrate the 2008 Governor’s Arts Awards celebration here.

The public open house will have self-guided tours, giveaways, Wii Fit stations, airbrush painters and refreshments.

“We want thousands of people to come,” Witter said. “We want families to come.”

The open house will provide a first look at the high-tech operating suites, the state-of-the-art emergency room, the private single-occupancy patient rooms and the newest comprehensive orthopedics unit.

Witter called the tour an unprecedented insider’s look at the tower because guests will be able to see many areas patients might never see otherwise.

Patients will start to be received March 19.

Along with the patient tower, the entire Williamsport Regional Medical Center will adopt the address on High Street. the new address will be a way to demonstrate physically that the medical center faces the city, Witter said.

“I think it’s the need for, certainly, the private patient rooms and the efficiency we can gain,” she said.

The emergency department will be housed in the first floor. It will be opened in two stages.

Stage one, which will occur in March, will have 22 private rooms replace 17 curtained bays. Stage two, which will occur in October, will have more improvements with 36 private rooms. the private treatment rooms will have a television, private telephone and visitor space.

There will be no second floor as the first floor’s ceilings are too high and officials wanted the floors of Susquehanna Tower to match those of Heritage Building, which is the name given the original Williamsport Hospital building.

The third floor will be a remodeled Birthplace, which will open in the summer.

It will include a decentralized nursing model that keeps nurses close to mothers and babies, a 15-bed newborn nursery and 17 private post-partum rooms.

An education and conference center also will be on the third flood, which will have six conference rooms appointed for health education classes and support groups. It will provide educational space for the Family Medicine Residency Program and the Commonwealth Medical College.

The fourth floor will host the surgical services with five new surgery suites, a cardiac operation room and is designed for future growth and changes in technology.

On the sixth floor, which skips the fifth floor, will be the inpatient joint replacement and spine unit.

The unit will have 24 private rooms equipped with bathrooms and guest accommodations. the decentralized nursing station outside the patient rooms will improve response time. A therapy gym, exclusively for joint and spine patients, is designed to simulate everyday activities.

Also on the floor will be the progressive care unit, which will be private rooms with decentralized nursing. the rooms will limit the need for transfers as a patient recovers. the 28-bed unit will be for patients who need cardiac monitoring and an intermediate level of care. A wireless cardiac monitoring system will enable patients to be monitored from anywhere in the hospital.

Breast cancer is a devastating illness that strikes down wonderful women in their prime through no fault of their own.  we lose our mothers, friends, and sisters after watching them go through agonizing treatments.  I have worked with cancer patients and have been with many dying people, yet it did not prepare me for the senseless death of my college roommate from breast cancer at the age of 42, leaving behind her husband and three beautiful young children.  it is very emotional.

The best treatment for any cancer is prevention.  a good example is the use of a vaccine for cervical cancer.  Breast cancer prevention will happen one day, and until it does, we will need to focus on early detection through screening and improving treatment.  As I have discussed in the past, prevention and screening are a significant part of the ACA.  Because of the ACA, insurance is required to cover all U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Grade a and B recommendations, which are services expected to have substantial to moderate net benefits.  So where does breast cancer screening fit in this realm?

There are a number of groups who determine breast cancer screening protocols, or at least come up with some guideline they feel is reasonable.  The USPSTF is one, and there is also the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, American Academy of Family Physicians,  American College of Radiology, and even individual health care institutions.  I’m certain I’ve forgotten a few.  The recommendations vary significantly, so providers and patients remain confused.

In this country, screening protocols are decided based on effectiveness, and each group determines effectiveness in their own way.  Data and studies abound supporting any and all positions on the breast cancer screening question.  one thing that is not considered is cost, mainly because our society does not allow overt rationing.

Although the institutions that determine these protocols have good intentions, all have inherent interests and biases, which may bring the objectivity of their recommendations into question.  For example, with our fee-for-service system, providers get paid more to do more, and some of these organizations represent the providers.  Reading their guidelines, you’ll notice many of these organizations recommend more aggressive screening protocols.  On the flip side, other organizations may have a vested interest in keeping costs down, and their protocols are less aggressive.  and of course, especially with the non-profits such as Komen, there are passionate people involved who have been profoundly affected by their experience with the disease, and their emotions play deeply into the decisions those organizations make.

What is happening now?

The power of the “Breast Lobby” is huge, and they spend a lot of their donor’s money on lobbying activity.  In November, 2009, the USPSTF released updated guidelines on breast cancer screening protocols.  The new recommendations changed the screening guidelines in women under 50 significantly.  The Breast Lobby kicked in, and within a month, the USPSTF had to “update the language” to a less restrictive stance.  still, the recommendation for breast cancer screening in women under age 50 is Grade C, which means “Clinicians may provide this service to selected patients depending on individual circumstances. However, for most individuals without signs or symptoms there is likely to be only a small benefit from this service.”

As I stated earlier, the ACA requires coverage for all preventive services considered Grade a and B.  a line had to be drawn somewhere.  So what happened with breast cancer screening?  Because of the power of the Breast Lobby, the law was changed to specifically allow coverage for screening mammograms under age 50, even though it is not Grade a or B.  Men, just so you know, prostate cancer screening is not Grade a or B, and will not be included in your coverage.  The Prostates need a better lobby.  The best answer though is that politics and medical care decisions should not go hand in hand.  we should have an independent organization made up of all constituents to decide these important matters.

Although I am not fond of the way England runs their health care system, they have one great component – the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, or NICE.   This organization rationally determines screening protocols based on the best available evidence.  once NICE determines the protocol, providers and patients all get on board.  my favorite part – cost is part of the equation.  we are an innovative country and are very good at adapting ideas from others.  Creating something NICE here would improve care and help us utilize our health care dollars more efficiently.  And with the “third way,” people can buy coverage not covered by the NICE people.

What is really the right answer?  In my Quest for Simplicity, I would love to see organizations come together to agree on one protocol based more on evidence and less on emotion and payer structures.  all these great people joining together could improve outreach, treatment and research, and eventually cure this horrible disease.  In the meantime, let’s continue to push for less political and more evidence-based ways to provide good health care in a cost effective way.

Addendum:  Wow, shortly after posting this article, there is a news release that Komen has reversed their decision on funding planned Parenthood.  We are in a new world – electronic mobs move fast and change can occur so quickly.  Wouldn’t it be great if we could change to taking politics out of health care decisions just as quickly?  Scary and exciting how fast the world can stand up now.

A single mother of two has been fighting to stay alive.

In 2006, Cheyenne Stepp was diagnosed with a strange genetic disease called neurofibromatoses type 2, which constantly causes tumors to grow on her nerve endings. she was diagnosed during a check up while pregnant with her daughter. It has caused her to lose sight in one eye and hearing in one ear.

Now, she needs to get to Denver to have yet another brain surgery. this one: to save her sight.

However, neither she nor her family have the money to pay for lodging or food while she’s there, and she needs the surgery by March 1st.

BREMERTON —The view from the car did not include Washington, D.C., New York City or London.

From their white Ford Taurus, the Ayers family didn’t see much past their former Central Kitsap apartment complex or Walmart. A night spent in the car after being evicted from their home in the fall of 2005 turned into weeks. There wasn’t much thought beyond day-to-day living and finding the next place that would accept a homeless family of four.

Ke’Andrea “Kiki” Ayers, 22, is now living in New York, trying her hand in production work as a freelancer for MTV and BET networks. she looks back and recognizes how the experience of living in the car affected her. and motivated her.

“I don’t want to end up back in that situation,” said Kiki, who graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., in December. “That’s what I always keep in mind.”

Her sister, Selena, 24, graduated in international relations from George Washington University, also in Washington, D.C. she earned a master’s degree at England’s University of Manchester and is now studying for a law degree at the University of Westminster in London.

Their lives are a long way away from those nights in the Taurus. There is little doubt the steel they forged then helped get them where they are.

Andrea Ayers — single mother to Kiki, Selena and Wayne, now a sophomore at Bremerton High School — was working two jobs in 2005 when she was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. the symptoms of the disease include fatigue and joint achiness. Andrea determined she could no longer keep two jobs and stay healthy. with the loss of income, paying rent became difficult. Eventually the Ayerses were evicted from the apartment they were renting.

The family had seen setbacks before, but they always had somewhere else to go, Kiki said. this time they didn’t.

Kiki remembers her mother’s persistent upbeat attitude breaking when Wayne had to give up his bicycle because it wouldn’t fit in the trunk of the Taurus.

“She started crying because she felt bad,” Kiki said.

So the daughters made their mother feel better.

“It could be fun living in a car,” they surmised.

“She has always been a good mother so we weren’t mad at her,” Kiki said.

Selena, who had graduated from high school the previous spring, split lookout duty with Andrea during the night. they feared there could be consequences for a family living in a car.

“We’d sleep in shifts to make sure the cops wouldn’t come to us,” she said. “We were very worried about the family being split up at that point.”

One night an apartment complex security guard did tap on the window — but only to ask the family to leave the parking lot.

The family had thought the nights in the car would be few. But days turned into weeks. Being evicted from an apartment made it tougher for them to get an OK to move into a new place.

BALANCING ON THE EDGE

Jim Stowers, housing and homeless services manager at Kitsap Community Resources, said the Ayerses’ situation is not uncommon.

“When you’re running that closely every month, if one thing goes wrong it’s kind of a balancing act,” he said. “It’s not uncommon to hear someone say, ‘I just never thought this was going to happen to me. I never thought I’d have to ask for help.”

The Ayers family didn’t ask for much help, keeping most people in the dark about their plight.

“I never told anybody so nobody knew,” Kiki said. Instead she and other family mothers would dress and put on makeup each day in the car, cleaning up at school or other public places.

Kiki’s friend Aaron Scheer said the family hid living in a car well.

“I didn’t know specifics, but she always had a smile on her face regardless of her circumstances,” Scheer said. “I never saw her looking sad or looking down ever.”

After school, Kiki spent much of her time at the Sylvan Way branch of the Kitsap Regional Library branch doing homework. she was there so much she grew tired of the place. Selena spent a lot of time there, too, looking for work online. Eventually she landed a job at Circuit City and began to help with family expenses.

LIVES LAUNCHED

A little more than a month after they first moved into their car, the Ayers family found an apartment.

Kiki began taking classes at Olympic College in the Running Start program. Selena eventually followed her there. Kiki had planned to transfer to Washington State University along with her friend, South Kitsap High School alum Ashlee Moore. When Moore was killed in a 2007 car accident, Kiki made other plans, opting for Howard University’s broadcast journalism program in Washington, D.C.

The young women paid for college by going after every scholarship, grant and loan available, handing in applications as early as registration opened to make sure they had everything in place well on time.

Both sisters say their drive to succeed was inspired by their mother.

Andrea Ayers said she beat a consistent message with her daughters: do well in school so they would be in better positions later in their own adult lives. she also fed their senses of worth.

“I validated them at an early age and continued to validate them, the fact that I could see they could be somebody,” Andrea said.

The daughters remember their mom’s insistence. Selena once expressed doubts about going to college.

“My mom said, ‘No, you’re going,’” she said.

Andrea shares credit with her kids’ teachers. one who stands out, she said, is Rita Pepper, who taught Kiki at PineCrest Elementary and now teaches at Bremerton High.

“I think they went above and beyond their teacher roles,” Andrea said.

Family members grew used to being poor, Selena said, but they banded together. When they had jobs they helped with family finances. one day, Selena said, Wayne mowed the lawn for a teacher, earning $25. on his way home he stopped at Albertsons and bought groceries.

“We didn’t give up hope because at the end of the day we’re all together,” Selena said. “At the end of the day, we were always OK.”

RESILIENCE KEY

Stowers said that kind of attitude can make a big difference for families facing similar situations today.

“We see that a lot of people are remarkably resilient,” he said. “They’ll just take those opportunities and run with them.”

Andrea and Wayne are doing better financially now, Selena said, in part because there are two fewer mouths to feed at home.

The family, though a continent and an ocean apart, remains close. on Thursday Selena posted on Twitter of her sister, “I miss her like an idiot misses the point.”

That same day Kiki posted her own Twitter message, one that reveals nothing of the struggles she and her family saw. “I’ve been rich since 1989 … has nothing to do with bank accounts. just a state of mind!”

Andrea confesses she is “really proud” of her daughters, and she continues to deliver the college message to Wayne, who she said plans to attend. Times might get tough, but Kiki and Selena profess they’re still believers in the message they got from their mother.

“You can always turn it around,” Selena said. “Rather than focusing on the negative, focus on how you can make it out.”

WHITE ROCK – Kim Angel became a single parent by choice – and moved to White Rock by choice.

"something just kept compelling me to come to White Rock," she said.

While Angel, executive director of the Surrey Foundation, spent time in Vancouver as a child, she spent a lot of her life in Calgary and Toronto. When her son was three, they were living in Calgary and she was frequently making trips back and forth to Vancouver for work.

"I would spend the day in White Rock, with or without my son, when I would be in Vancouver," Angel said.

She decided to make the move to the City by the Sea.

And Angel isn’t alone. Census data from 2006 reported that there were high numbers of single parents, as well as divorcees, in pockets of White Rock.

Angel said a big thing that drew her to White Rock was its ambiance.

"I wanted to raise my son somewhere you can walk down the street, look people in the eye and smile and ask about their day. I wanted that sense of safety and community."

She said she didn’t want her son to grow up in a big, bustling area.

"I wanted him to feel like he was part of the community."

Another large part of her attraction was the scenery and nature.

"I love the ocean and love being by the water," Angel said. "and there was a lot of opportunity for recreational activities that my son and I could do together."

She said she has a lot of friends who are single parents.

"When it comes to connecting through child care and through school, parents kind of band together here and support each other."

While Angel remains unmarried, she is now in a relationship. she said she wouldn’t change her decision to move to the area for anything.

So where are the other single parents and divorcees, according to the census data?

In a section of White Rock between Oxford Street and Johnston Road, 19 per cent of the residents are divorced, compared to seven per cent of all Metro Vancouver adults.

In another area, between Johnston Road and best Street, 17 per cent of the residents are divorced.

The two neighbourhoods in White Rock both have high rates of apartment housing.

In one neighbourhood in White Rock, 58 per cent of all families with children are single parents, compared to 24 per cent across Metro Vancouver as a whole.

Barbara Mitchell, a professor of sociology at Simon Fraser University, said there are a few things that are probably related to why there are more divorcees and single-parent families in the area: housing and socio-economic characteristics, age and cultural background.

"White Rock, for instance, tends to have an older population – making the likelihood of family breakdown higher – and it is less culturally diverse than other neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver," Mitchell said.

"and we know that cultural background can affect certain family values, such as whether divorce and single-parenthood is acceptable to the ethnic or religious community."

Mitchell said people with British and European backgrounds tend to have higher divorce and single-parenthood rates than East and South Asians or recent immigrants from more traditional family-centred collectivist societies.

"certain types of families also tend to gravitate to certain neighbourhoods because of shared interests, values and the availability of amenities and services that meet the needs of the families living there.

"For example, parents with children tend to like to live in neighbourhoods with parks and schools and a suburban lifestyle while divorcees may be looking for less expensive single dwelling homes such as apartments."

Mitchell said there are a few things to note about this data.

First, the data doesn’t supply information about where or when people were divorced, or if the adults in single-parent families were ever married.

Secondly, she urged caution in assuming that people are moving to or are attracted to these places, because the data doesn’t state that.

Finally, she said to take note of the fact that this data is based on individual characteristics.

"Characteristics of those individuals can change over time, and rather quickly due to migration, mobility and aging," she said, which could change the results of the census.

Mitchell added that small geographical areas, such as White Rock, can skew statistical results since the numbers of people are fairly small.

In an effort to change things up a bit, Naverre, a 29-year-old single mother of one from Thibodaux, decided to begin a ministry geared toward single mothers and ladies.

Called Single Mom Overjoyed, Rejuvenated, Empowewred! (SMORE), the ministry is an off shoot of Visions World Outreach, located at 102 Holley St., Thibodaux.

“my mother and father are pastors at the church,” Naverre said, referring to Visions World Outread. “I basically was looking to do something to focus attention on single mothers and ladies out and the trials and tribulations all of us go through in that role.”

The inaugural kickoff for Naverre’s ministry is tentatively scheduled for March 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Peltier Park.

Naverre is dubbing the event a Single Mothers and Single Ladies Appreciation.

The free celebration will feature a meal, gifts, a testimony hour and guest speakers.

“This is just a start,” Naverre said. “I plan on getting everyone who comes to sign in and give us their numbers and what some of their needs are as single mothers and ladies so we can hopefully assist them.”

Naverre’s friend, Kendra Lovincy, another young single mother from Thibodaux, is assisting Dwan with the ministry.

“I have two small children and can tell you it is a tough job to be a single parent,” Lovincy said. “we want them to know that single mothers and ladies are appreciated and that we are here to help them on their journey.”

Another message Naverre wants to impart on those in attendance is just because you are a single mother doesn’t mean your life has to stop.

“I hold down a full-time job and am going to college for my degree,” Naverre said. “we want ladies out there to understand that you can still pursue your dreams even though you may be without a spouse.”

Among the many activities planned for the three-hour event is a balloon release where participants will write message on a balloon.

“At the conclusion of the event they will release the balloons to indicate how they are releasing certain things from their life that might be holding them back or bothering them,” Naverre said.

Naverre said she hopes this can be the trigger to generate future gatherings and a possible support group for single mothers and ladies in the community.

PUTATAN: all Jamil Ahmad wanted was a house for his family. but the 69-year-old never got the chance to see his wish come true after losing his battle against cancer just about a week ago.

“As much as it was painful to see him go, I feel a little bit of relief as my late husband is no longer suffering. He is now with God,” said Aishah Abdullah, 47.

Just five months back, life was good for the family. It may not be perfect but at least they had a comfortable place to call home in Kampung Lembising, here.

But on Sept 28, 2011, just a few weeks after Hari Raya, their house was gutted by fire, believed caused by a candle to light the house following a blackout in the area.

“At the time, only my late husband and our two children were at home. I was away in Peninsular Malaysia to help care for my granddaughter,” said Aishah.

According to her, Jamil, a small-time tailor, was awakened by the heat from the fire, prompting him to wake their children up and save themselves from the raging fire. They were unable to save anything, except for the cloth they had on.

“We lost everything in the fire, including his sewing machine, which was our only source of income. Our life became harder after his eyesight was affected due to long hours on the sewing machine. He used to be fast in his work but recently, it would take him at least three days to complete an army’s uniform … basically he earned about RM200 monthly.

“Of course it is not enough, but with the additional RM300 from the senior citizen’s welfare aid, it had helped us a little to make ends meet.

“But now, all those are gone. the welfare aid ended with my husband’s passing. I am just thankful that I am getting a bit of help from my children, those who are working, but I cannot expect much as they have their own family to feed,” said Aishah.

After the fire robbed them of their house, a kind neighbour had allowed them to put up for free at his rented house, just a few steps away from where Aishah’s house used to be.

“After the fire, my late husband went to the Putatan District Office to and fro to apply for welfare assistance. He even went to see the people’s representatives for the area … we always get the same answer – the officer is not available, the Datuk is not around, the person-in-charge will get back to you … but until this date, no one has actually come to see us. I tried asking for the officer’s and Datuks’ numbers, but the personnel told us they do not have their numbers.

“I have even gone to these offices myself. I have filled in the necessary forms and yet, nothing has ever been done. we have received welfare help once and that was it. Someone from the district office even told me that help was on theway, and that our house would be re-built before December last year, but none of those ever materialised.

“There was even a time when one of the district office’s personnel asked me where my voting area was, I told the person that I vote in Likas. the person just kept quiet … I felt it was odd for someone to ask me such a question, it is immaterial … after all I am just a single mother who needs help,” said Aishah, venting out her frustration.

Worried with their situation, Jamil’s condition worsened and in November last year, he became bedridden.

“Even then, everyday, without fail, he would ask us whether we have gone to the district office to check the status of our application … and every time he asked, I would say yes, just to make him feel happy.

“At least once a week, a doctor from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital would come to examine him. One day he came with foodstuff for us, we are forever grateful. but my husband’s condition became worst. He passed away on Feb 7. He left without having the chance to see us live comfortably.

“We have been living in this rented house for several months now. the house owner has been very kind to allow us put up in this house for free. Initially it was just up to December, but he extended it to March. we will have to start paying rental next month,” said Aishah, holding back her tears.

Aishah’s third child, Abdul Salim, said that his father used to ride a bicycle to the district office.

“He would also always talk about the fire and the RM2,000 he had been saving all this while to undergo eye surgery. He was hoping it would fix his eyesight so that he would be able to see and sew better since that was his only source of income.

“My father kept telling us how he regretted not picking up his pants and the box where he kept the money. It was always sad to hear him say his regrets over and over again,” said the 26-year-old army personnel who is attached to the Kukusan Army Camp in Tawau.

Salim said he could only send between RM100 and RM200 to his mother, as he is also married, and has a child to care for.

Aishah’s fourth child, Zarinah, 24, and youngest daughter, nor Halimah, 15, are the ones that are still schooling, while her other children, Minah Noor, 28, Rahim, 27, Mohd Halim, 22, and Mohd Amir, 18, are working.

Zarinah is pursuing her degree in Accounting and Information System at Universiti Utara Malaysia while nor Halimah will be sitting for her Penilaian Menengah Rendah this year.

Still, Aishah has not given up. she will continue to seek help from the relevant authorities.

I'm also a full-time student and this is the majority of my part-time income.  It's going to be interesting when my Post 9/11 GI BIll runs out at the end of this semester and I have another year beyond that.  It's a great benefit, but changing your major can really burn you–and to think I changed it to a major that will benefit society more than my previous one would.  every little bit counts.
